Forget Wan-Bissaka: United Should Be Entering The Fray To Sign This £25m Rated Fullback Instead

Manchester United’s focus appears to be entirely on signing a right-back in Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but could they be missing a golden opportunity to strengthen the opposing flank?

There’s no doubt Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side do require another option on the right-hand side with Ashley Young and Diogo Dalot the two main alternatives, but with Luke Shaw not having any competition at left-back, surely that is where they need to strengthen first.

Shaw was deservedly given the club’s player of the year award last season, but the fact that he wasn’t even selected for England, with both Ben Chilwell and Danny Rose favoured ahead of him, demonstrates he isn’t an elite fullback.

That isn’t only Gareth Southgate’s opinion either, but United legend Roy Keane had a few choice words about the left-back’s ability after the home defeat to Manchester City back in April.

So, who should Solskjaer’s recruitment team be looking at? In the past, Alex Sandro from Juventus has been touted as a possible option. Recent reports in Italy have indicated that the Brazilian could be used in a part-exchange deal for Paul Pogba.

However, after a poor season, and the fact that he will be 29 on his next birthday, the Red Devils would likely be considering other targets.

One player that United should definitely be considering is Celtic’s Kieran Tierney. The Scottish international has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in the past but not recently.

Recent reports indicate that Arsenal and Napoli are very much interested in the left-back, with the player available for £25m. Considering Wan-Bissaka would cost at least double, if not more, Tierney would present a more cost-effective signing.

At 22 years of age, he perfectly fits into the club’s new remit of buying players who they can develop. He also has experience of playing in the Champions League and understands the pressures of playing for a big club.

One downside is that he has had a lot of injury issues this season, but his ongoing groin problem should be resolved after an operation this summer.

Tierney would also provide good competition for Shaw, and has the ability to even usurp the current first choice. He scored one goal and provided six assists in 40 games last campaign for Celtic.

Although he is only playing in Scotland, there’s no doubt there is the potential there for the player to evolve into a top class left-back. United would be wise to enter the battle for his signature if he is available this summer.
