Reports in Brazil have suggested that the two clubs have agreed a deal, which includes an option to buy for €27m (£24m) at the end of the season, but it appears there are a number of obstacles still to overcome.
In addition to the salary, United were also believed to be keen on an obligation to buy, rather than a purchase option, and it remains to be seen if these issues can be resolved before the transfer deadline next week.
Pereira has not featured in a matchday squad this season, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having a wealth of options available to him in the middle of the park, including the likes of Fred, Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba.
