Club Trying To ‘Lock Down’ 33.5M Rated Defender To New Contract In Attempt To Ward Off United And Chelsea

Roma general manager Tiago Pinto has met with the agent of centre-back Gianluca Mancini to try and “lock down” the player to a new contract, according to Calciomercato.com.

The Italian website claims that the Giallorossi are wary of interest from the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea, who have been keeping tabs on the 24-year-old in recent weeks.

It is believed Pinto met with Mancini’s representative, Giuseppe Riso, to discuss extending the Italian international’s stay at the Stadio Olimpico beyond the summer of 2024.

Reports had previously suggested that Roma would be willing to offload the centre-half if a club made a bid in the region of €34m (£29m) to €39m (£33.5m) but it seems the Serie A side have had a change of heart.

United are interested in strengthening their defensive options but recent reports in the local media suggest that Villarreal’s Pau Torres is at the top of their list of targets.
