Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts after Phil Jones’ unfortunate error at Wembley last night.
The Englishman was on the scoresheet – at the wrong end however – as United lost 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur.
Christian Eriksen opened the scoring after just 11 seconds when Spurs knocked it long straight from kick-off and United unable to defend what was seemingly a simple clearance.
And things went from bad to worse just before the half-hour mark, when Jones stuck the ball into his own net.
Jones, who was attempting to steer clear a well-driven Kieren Trippier cross, instead slammed the ball into the top corner of his own goal, leaving David De Gea stunned and the game all but over for the visitors.
While United pressed for goals in the second half, they were unable to find a way back into the game, and were unlucky to not go further behind late on had it not been for a combination of some excellent saves from De Gea and some lacklustre finishing from the home side.
The result sees United slip back to 15 points behind leaders City, however with Chelsea and Liverpool also losing in recent weeks – they still sit three points ahead of the chasing pack.
That fact serves as no consolation for United fans (or Phil Jones) however …
