United players ‘beg for forgiveness’ after Champions League exit

Manchester United players have taken to social media to ‘beg for forgiveness’ following their exit from the Champions League on Tuesday night.

United were thrown out of the competition at the last-16 by La Liga side Sevilla, who ran out 2-0 winners on aggregate over Jose Mourinho’s side.

After a goal-less draw in the first leg at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, two goals from Wissam Ben Yedder at Old Trafford in the return fixture ended any hopes of a fairytale return to Europe’s elite competition for the Red Devils.

The manner of United’s defeat came under heavy criticism from a number of pundits and former players.

Ex-United midfielder Paul Scholes slammed the performance at Old Trafford as “very bad”, saying Jose Mourinho’s side “had nothing – no energy, no fast start.”

And his former team-mate at United Rio Ferdinand agreed, summing up the display as simply “terrible”.

Now, a number of players have used their personal social media accounts to apologise supporters for the lacklustre display on Tuesday night.

“We ask the fans for forgiveness following our exit,” centre-back Eric Bailly tweeted to his followers. “Last night was terrible and we must all reflect and take note so it doesn’t happen again. It’s painful, but we have to get right back up, dust ourselves off, and look ahead.”

Jesse Lingard, who played for 77 minutes on Tuesday, posted:  “Angry. Sad. Hurt. Disappointed. A lot of emotions, But knowing how good the bond is between the club, fans and players shows me that we can stick together through the ups and downs and that we can bounce back.”

Marcus Rashford, who looked particularly emotional at full-time against Sevilla, also posted this message to fans: “Fell short last night, hard result to take! We have to bounce back on Saturday.”
