Will United Sign Atletico’s Hitman Amid Interest From Chelsea And Manchester City?

It is no secret that LVG is on the lookout for another goal-scoring striker after the Radamel Falcao experiment did not work out and with Robin van Persie only delivering 10 goals last season in a campaign ravaged by injury for the Dutchman. Wayne Rooney still looks the part in the United striking options but he needs another top class player to push him on to greater heights.

If reports in the Daily Mail are to be believed then it seems that LVG has been offered top striker Mario Mandzukic by Atletico Madrid and the United boss is seemingly quite keen on the Croatian hitman who cost the Spanish side £18million a year ago.

Mandzukic got off to a flying start in La Liga after joining Atletico from German champions Bayern Munich and the striker banged in 20 goals by February after coming in to replace Diego Costa who signed for Chelsea. Replacing Costa was not an easy task as the Spaniard had an impeccable goal scoring record and was a Madrid favourite but the Croatian rose to the challenge and delivered big time before reportedly falling out with the Atletico coaching staff which let to the return of Fernando Torres and very limited appearances for the Spanish champions for Mandzukic in the remainder of the season.

Mandzukic is used to playing for big clubs and reportedly wants to play in the Premier League so should fit in at United plus he would provide a different option to Rooney, James Wilson and RVP (should he stay). The knock on the Croatian forward is that he is also 29 years old like Rooney and United are looking to sign a younger striker who can grow with them and provide a definite scoring option for many years to come. It remains to be seen what LVG does but we can be assured that he is looking at the best strikers around given his dealings in the transfer window last summer but he may need to work quickly with Chelsea and Manchester City seemingly also interested.
