Manchester United are no stranger to big additions in their squad, spending vast amounts to bring Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku to their club this summer, but the most important deal of the window could well be their capture of Nemanja Matic from Chelsea.

In a deal worth reportedly around £40m, Manchester United have spent vast amounts to get the man Jose Mourinho wanted but the Portuguese boss is set to reunite with one of his favourite players- and he’ll finally be able to name the Serbian international in a side alongside Paul Pogba.

Mourinho has wanted Pogba and Matic in the same team for some time and it’s clear the presence of a defensive-minded midfielder was needed last season, as United struggled to take control of games where they were expected to win.

The Portuguese boss has seen holding-midfielders stand as a crucial part of his team throughout his career, ranging from Claude Makelele during his first spell with Chelsea to Xabi Alonso during his time with Real Madrid. In his first season at Old Trafford though, that sort of player was missing.

Crucially, Matic’s experience in working with Mourinho means he can immediately slot inside the side and will not take time to learn his boss’ system- as it’s a set-up he’s played in, and thrived in, before- and that was crucial to this reunion.

It’s no secret that Matic wanted to reunite with Mourinho at Old Trafford ever since the Portuguese boss was first appointed as the Red Devils boss and having a player so loyal in the dressing room will be crucial, especially after what happened two-years ago at Chelsea.

Matic’s arrival provides balance to Manchester United’s midfield that will allow the Red Devils to get the best out of Paul Pogba, as the world’s most expensive signing was tied down with chains last season that limited his involvement. Now, Matic will release the shackles.

Lindelof’s addition in defence is certainly a significant upgrade and Lukaku’s arrival in attack gives Manchester United the top-class striker they craved but the addition of Matic is the signing that could propel them to the Premier League title.
