Why Mourinho must dodge this record-breaking deal

Jose Mourinho has had a mixed first season as Manchester United manager. The former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss has remained adamant that his first term will be defined by the trophies won, already having lifted the Community Shield and EFL Cup and looking firm favourites for the Europa League.

However, last night’s Manchester Derby proved that there is still a lot of work to be done on either side of the city, a lot of which may well be addressed in the transfer market this summer.

Reports this week have emerged claiming that Barcelona and Brazil superstar Neymar beleives that Mourinho is ready to pay more than double the world record transfer fee and fork out €200m to bring the winger to Manchester.

Whilst the Barca star, and integral member their awe inspiring MSN trio, could bring so much to Old Trafford in terms of entertainment and individual success, having already notched 100 goals for the Catalan giants, there is a sense the money could be much better spent.

The £90m spent to bring Paul Pogba back to Manchester was a huge amount of money to spend on a single player and is a tag that will hang over his United career until the day he leaves or retires.

While fans and pundits alike will become accustom to such fees as they naturally grow over the coming years, it’s rather clear they’re not quite ready for €200m just yet.

Furthermore, Mourinho has begun to build something in his first season at the club. With the four additions last summer forming a new spine at Old Trafford, it’s clear the Portuguese is looking to build a side based around collective talent to take on the Premier League and Europe.

It seems, then, that his plans would be much better served with a few additions here and there rather than splashing nearly two season’s worth of transfer budget on one player.

This is not to suggest that the Red Devils boss should not be making big name signings. Avoiding Neymar still allows room for an Antoine Griezmann here or a Romelu Lukaku there, but they seem additions based on the needs of his side rather than just a big name.

Whilst the signing of such a global star would more than excite the fans, in the long run it is wise for United to add players that are actually needed and fit the bill for Mourinho.
