Why Manchester United should sell De Gea to Real Madrid if the latest rumours are true

The rumours are starting to pick up again surrounding the potential transfer of Spanish number 1 David De Gea from Manchester United to Real Madrid. Clearly, United would be loath to lose one of the world’s best keepers, especially to a club they consider to be their only true rivals for the ‘biggest club in the world’ crown.

United refused to be pushed around last time speculation mounted, and it appears the Red Devils will be taking a similar stance this time around too. United are adamant they will only part with their prized asset should they obtain a player or two in return from Madrid. Not just bit-part squad players either, a star for a star.

The Mirror have picked up on a story from Spanish outlet Don Balon, which claims that Real president Florentino Perez would be willing to offer Toni Kroos, Luka Modric or Karim Benzema in a potential swap deal.

These are 3 starters for Madrid, however, it is thought that Jose Mourinho does not want any of them. The Portuguese is said to be much more interested in acquiring centre-half Raphael Varane. Varane is a player that Madrid are desperate to keep hold of, as they seem him as the future of their defence.

United have also been linked heavily with the signings of Alvaro Morata and James Rodriguez in recent weeks. There are no shortage of player’s that United would like to sign from Madrid, which gives the impression that a deal will be struck at some point in the summer. The rumours surrounding De Gea don’t seem to be going away, so it’s probably best United agree a deal that would work for both parties.

As Michael Carrick is departing Old Trafford this summer, signing either Toni Kroos or Luka Modric would be huge for United. Without Carrick they would lack a deep-lying playmaker of genuine world-class ability, Kroos and Modric are certainly this. United have a long-standing interest with both players, having been linked relentlessly with each in years gone by.

Furthermore, a swap deal involving Karim Benzema also makes a lot of sense for United at this point in time. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s United career seemingly over following knee ligament damage sustained versus Anderlecht, United look in desperate need of top-level reinforcements up-front.

Although Marcus Rashford is performing exceptionally well, at such a young age him and Martial alone cannot be expected to provide the amount of goals required to win a league. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to sign  a seasoned goal scorer from one of Europe’s biggest clubs, one who knows how to deliver under pressure across a whole season.

If these players have been offered, United should have a serious think about taking the deal. De Gea is a top class keeper but hasn’t had an awful lot to do this season when compared to last. Mourinho has solidified United’s defence exceptionally well, and whereas De Gea is still a world-class player, swapping him for world-class Modric, Kroos, or Benzema could have a positive effect on the side overall.
