United’s Five Best Signings Since The Departure Of Ferguson

Manchester United have signed a lot of duds since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013, but there have also been some success stories despite the club’s scattergun approach to recruitment.

Certainly, the club have begun to get a grip of the situation over the past year, with last summer being seen as a particularly positive transfer window with three signings having all made the desired impact.

Over the past seven years, there have been others that have also proven to be successful purchases, although it must be said these have been fewer and far between than fans would have liked.

Press the “next page” as we go through the five best signings United have made since the retirement of Ferguson:

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The Swedish international was brought in on a free transfer, and scored 28 goals and provided 10 assists in 46 appearances during his first season at Old Trafford.

A knee injury prematurely ended Ibrahimovic’s stay in England and he was allowed to leave for LA Galaxy just 18 months after his arrival.

Sergio Romero

Ironically another free transfer, considering how much United have spent on transfer fees and agents over the years, the Argentine has been a reliable backup option for David De Gea.

Romero arrived from Sampdoria in 2015 and has made 58 appearances in all competitions, never letting the team down when being called upon to start games.

Juan Mata

It was a surprise when Chelsea allowed the Spaniard to leave for £37.1m in 2014 but he has been a moderate success for United, having scored 48 goals and provided 42 assists in 249 games.

Mata will be remembered mostly for his two goals at Anfield, but it must be said that at 31 years of age, his best days are probably behind him.

Ander Herrera

This choice may split opinion slightly but the £29m that the Red Devils paid Athletic Bilbao did turn out to be decent business, with the Spaniard having made 189 appearances for the club over a five year period.

There was disappointment when Herrera left for PSG on a free transfer last summer which tells you he had proven to be a good signing.

Harry Maguire

I could have gone with Bruno Fernandes but the Portuguese international has only been at the club for a couple of months, while the England international has shown what he can do over a longer period.

The £80m that United paid for Maguire was certainly over the odds but he has given the backline some much-needed backbone which should hold the team in good stead going forward over the next few years.
