United’s Critic In Chief Paul Merson Has Been Running His Mouth Off Again

Well it was a couple of weeks back that Paul Merson earned his money as one of Sky Sports’ most controversial pundits and came out swinging saying that Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham would win the top 4 spots to qualify for the Champions league this year leaving Manchester United as the team on the outside looking in.

Well Merson may have outdone himself this time calling Manchester United “a “Subbuteo team” based on their machine-like and mechanical tactics, “…where everybody is in same positions at the start of the game and at half time they in the same positions but at least they are not letting in goals…”

Merson’s reasoning for missing the top 4 was that Chelsea are more than capable of going on an 7-8 game winning run and conversally United are more than capable of going on an 8 game winless run where the points deficit would essentially be removed and United would be the ones playing catch-up.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the PSV game, Merson talked about how United have no movement, that they are almost machine-like, and they literally have no balance and while they are not letting in goals, crucially they can’t score either which is a necessary occurence if you want to win. One big positive for United is that when they play crap they do rarely lose which means they are very hard to beat which was shown how they were top of the league briefly. Merson did pay them a bit of a compliment saying that whilst he is not a big fan, one thing he will say is that they have a “bit of belly” about them as when they do play bad they don’t lose whereas their City neighbours get hammered when they lose (read their 4-1 beating by West Ham).

I guess we will see if Merson has got this one right at the end of the season or if the wily veteran LVG still knows what’s up. I think it is far more likely LVG is closer to the truth with his predictions.
