United Weigh Up Double Swoop For La Liga Pair With Release Clauses Worth A Combined £233m

Jan Oblak

Manchester United are interested in both Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak and central midfielder Saul Niguez, according to ESPN FC.

The club’s interest in Niguez has been well documented with reports claiming that United may look to trigger the 24-year-old’s €150m (£129.6m) release clause.

However, the interest in Oblak is a new and surprising development. The Slovenian is widely regarded as one of the world’s top goalkeepers but David De Gea’s presence at Old Trafford meant a move to the Manchester club has never been considered.

United’s number one has a contract that expires in 2020, and with no breakthrough over an extension, it seems scouts have been eyeing potential alternatives.

Oblak has a buyout clause of €120m (£103.7m) which is a figure that won’t scare off United who would see him as a good investment. The keeper is only 26 years of age and is one of the world’s best in his position.

Still, a move for the Atletico pair would prove very costly. With release clauses worth a combined £233m, it would be a massive outlay.
