Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is a transfer target for Manchester United, according to the Daily Mail.

The Spanish international is expected to be available for £30m this summer, with the Seagulls having now signed a new number one.

Bart Verbruggen has recently arrived from Anderlecht for £16.3m and, with Jason Steele having taken the gloves off Sanchez in the second half of last season, the United target is now effectively third choice at his current team.

A departure this summer is widely expected, as long as a club matches the 25-year-old’s asking price.

United are lining up backup options for Andre Onana

It is believed that the Red Devils have finally tabled an official bid for the Cameroon international, offering £34m upfront, with another £5m in add-ons.

However, this falls way short of Inter Milan’s asking price, which currently stands at €60m (£51.4m) and, if a compromise can’t be reached or another team (like Chelsea) hijack the deal, Erik ten Hag’s side will have to consider other goalkeepers.

The Mail report that Sanchez is deemed the main “alternative” to Onana at the moment, although he isn’t the only option being looked at. Feyenoord’s Justin Bijlow and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Kevin Trapp are also on United’s shortlist.

A couple of factors do favour Sanchez

One of the main reasons why Sanchez is being looked at is because he is very strong with the ball at his feet. It is an important attribute for ten Hag, who has targeted Onana for that reason as well.

Another advantage that the Brighton keeper has over the other candidates is the fact that he has played in the Premier League. In fact, the Spaniard has made 87 appearances in the top flight and, on top of that, he has played in both League One and League Two, during loan spells at Rochdale and Forest Green Rovers, where he learned how to deal with the physicality of English football.
