Manchester United are leading the race to sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, according to the Gazzetta Dello Sport.
The Italian publication claims that the Red Devils are “ahead” of Chelsea, Newcastle, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid in the battle to secure the Nigerian international’s services.
It is believed that qualification for the Champions League has made Old Trafford a more attractive destination than Chelsea, while the club’s history makes them a bigger draw than Newcastle.
Gazzetta report that Napoli want at least €120m (£103m) for Osimhen, which is significantly less than the €150m (£129m) asking price that was previously claimed.
A pivotal meeting is set to take place between Osimhen’s entourage and Napoli
The Serie A club’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis is said to be keen to know what Osimhen’s stance is on leaving Italy, and Gazzetta says he “seeks” a meeting with the forward’s representatives.
Osimhen’s contract with Napoli expires in 2025 and De Laurentiis wants a clear answer from the player so he knows whether to put him on the market this summer before his value depreciates.
United are in the market for a new number nine
News that the Red Devils are favourites to sign Osimhen will be welcomed by supporters, with manager Erik ten Hag reportedly looking to recruit a new striker.
Tottenham’s Harry Kane was thought to be his number-one option, with the likes of Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani and Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund also being pursued.
The interest in Osimhen may have faded due to his reported price tag but, if his valuation has been lowered slightly, as Gazzetta suggests, then they may move the Nigerian to the front of the pecking order.
The 24-year-old had a fantastic season in front of goal, scoring 31 times in 39 appearances, and it would be a huge coup if he ends up moving to Manchester.
