Red Bull Salzburg attacking midfielder Maurits Kjaergaard has admitted he is flattered by the interest being shown in him by Manchester United.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed back in April that the Red Devils have been scouting the 19-year-old. Asked whether interested clubs should forget about signing him this summer, Kjaergaard replied:
“Yes, right now they can. But the clubs you mention are huge. Of course, I also dream of playing in one of the biggest leagues in the world, so of course that makes me happy to hear. But I’m still young and I don’t stress about it at all. But when you hear those rumours, it just shows that you’re on the right track and doing a lot of good things at the club, so I just have to keep going. If I keep going, I’m sure I’ll be at a big club one day, but I’m not in a hurry.”
Kjaergaard has been likened to Luka Modric due to his hairstyle, but he is probably more similar to his fellow countryman Christian Eriksen. Last season for Salzburg, the playmaker scored two goals and provided nine assists in 36 appearances.
He’s not quite ready for a transfer to United
While Kjaergaard is clearly a very talented young player, his numbers for Salzburg playing in the Austrian top flight don’t exactly blow you away, so you would think that he would need at least another year of development before he has the capability to be a regular starter in the Premier League.
There could, though, be a situation in a couple of years’ time where Eriksen, whose contract expires in 2025, has his game time gradually reduced, so a much younger successor can be eased in and given more minutes. Whether that person will be Kjaergaard, we shall have to wait and see.
