Wolves forward Matheus Cunha has played down speculation linking him with a £60m move to Manchester United.
Reports in the English press had mentioned the Brazilian as a top target for the Red Devils. They are thought to be lining up a potential replacement for Anthony Martial, who will leave Old Trafford on a free transfer at the end of this month. When asked about the transfer rumours, Cunha replied:
“We see this rush (Manchester United). But I’m very happy at Wolves. My focus is on resting and making the most of it with my family. I’m very happy at Wolves. The focus now is to have better seasons and help the club. God willing, I will continue on this path.”
Cunha did have a decent season for Wolves, scoring 14 goals and contributing 8 assists in all competitions, but there are questions about whether he is the type of striker United need.
The Wolves star is not a no.9
The 25-year-old prefers to come towards the ball and run at defenders from deep with his dribbling skills. He doesn’t lead the line like a traditional striker.
For that reason, Cunha would not be a like-for-like replacement for Rasmus Hojlund and that could be a problem.
The Dane had to carry most of the responsibility as the no.9 last season and it was widely assumed that the club would go into the market to find someone who could take some of the weight off his shoulders. Cunha isn’t that player.
Who could United target instead?
The Red Devils are known to be interested in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenian international could compete with Hojlund and he could cost a similar amount to Cunha.
He has a €65m (£55m) release clause in his contract but the forward is also attracting interest from other Premier League teams, including Arsenal and Chelsea.
