Graeme Souness Lists United Transfer As No.1 In His Top 10 Premier League Signings Of The Summer

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness has named Mason Mount’s move to Manchester United as the best transfer in the Premier League so far this summer.

The Red Devils paid £55m to secure the England international’s services and Souness believes that the midfielder will rise to the challenge at his new club:

“I have always liked Mount, there is nothing to dislike about him. He has great technique and works his socks off. He is also leaving a big club to join, arguably, the biggest club. But he has shown he can handle the expectation of playing for Chelsea and England and, if he takes to his new surroundings at Old Trafford, he could be a star.”

Mount had less than a year left on his contract at Chelsea after negotiations over a new deal collapsed. Other clubs, including Arsenal and Liverpool, were also keen on securing the 24-year-old’s signature but he ultimately ended up moving to Manchester.

Souness has ranked his 10 best Premier League signings

The former Sky Sports pundit listed Mount first on a shortlist of ten transfers that Premier League teams have made over the last few months.

Neither Rasmus Hojlund nor Andre Onana were mentioned, but Tottenham’s capture of James Maddison, Alexis Mac Allister’s switch to Liverpool, Manchester City’s’ purchase of Mateo Kovacic and Newcastle’s signing of Harvey Barnes all made the top 5.

A second City recruit, Josko Gvardiol, also made Souness’s list, with the rest of the top 10 including the likes of Youri Tielemans (Aston Villa), James Milner, Joao Pedro (both Brighton) and Declan Rice (Arsenal).

United are not finished in the transfer market

Manager Erik ten Hag is thought to be keen on strengthening his squad further before the transfer window closes. A replacement for Harry Maguire will be needed, with Benjamin Pavard and Jean-Clair Todibo being considered.

With Fred poised to leave for Fenerbahce, another midfielder could also arrive with Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat a target. From Souness’s perspective, though, it is Mount who will ultimately prove to be United’s best buy.
