Manchester United have added Barcelona’s Marcos Alonso to a three-man shortlist as they look to reinforce their options at left-back, according to 90min.com.

The muscular injury sustained by Luke Shaw means that manager Erik ten Hag does not currently have a natural left-sided fullback fit and available, with Tyrell Malacia also sidelined.

Diogo Dalot filled in against Nottingham Forest but he is right-footed and the Red Devils are keen on finding someone who is more comfortable playing the position.

Consequently, the Manchester club could be forced into the transfer market to find cover ahead of deadline day on Friday. In addition to Alonso, the club have also made enquiries about Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilon.

All three United targets are currently out of favour at their current clubs

Alonso wasn’t even registered to play until this weekend, as Barca have a strict wage cap imposed on them by La Liga. The Spaniard is now available for selection but only because Marc-Andre ten Stegen has agreed to lower his salary following a contract extension.

The Catalan club could still face further problems as they try to bring in Joao Cancelo on loan so Alonso’s departure could free up some much-needed space.

Cucurella, meanwhile, is behind both Ben Chilwell and Ian Maatsen in the pecking order at Chelsea, despite only joining the Blues last year for £62m. Reguilon returned to Spurs from a loan spell at Atletico Madrid in June but he is not part of Ange Postecoglou’s first-team plans.

A lot could depend on finances

With Shaw expected to return to fitness after the next international break, a short-term solution is the priority. With that being the case, United may look at loan deals first.

In terms of Alonso, a temporary move is a possibility. Barca would be keen to get his salary off the wage bill. Spurs may consider a similar offer for Reguilon, but you can’t see Cucurella being loaned out unless United are prepared to pay Chelsea a fee.
