Sky Reporter Reveals United Have “Already Inquired” About Signing Dutch Ace With £34M Release Clause

Manchester United have “already inquired” about the possibility of purchasing Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee this month, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.

The journalist says the Red Devils were keen to ascertain the Netherlands Under 21 international’s availability but they were told in no uncertain terms that he won’t be sold in January.

Zirkzee does have a €40m (£34m) release clause in his contract but it is believed that can only be activated at the end of the season.

Plettenberg suggests United will maintain their interest in the Dutchman and there is a good chance that they will return with an offer in the summer.

A number of Premier League clubs want Zirkzee

The Dutchman has been garnering attention with his performances for Bologna this campaign, scoring 7 goals in 19 Serie A appearances.

Zirkzee only made the switch from Bayern Munich in August, but it is believed the likes of Arsenal, West Ham and Newcastle have also been keeping tabs on him, along with the Red Devils.

Will consider United consider alternative targets this month?

Erik ten Hag’s side are not really in a position to shell out large sums during the January transfer window due to concerns over Financial Fair Play.

There has been some talk about bringing in a player on loan to give Rasmus Hojlund some support up front. Timo Werner was one of the names considered, but he ended up joining Tottenham instead.

Three other players based in Germany; Bayern Munich’s Eric Choupo-Moting, Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy and Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen have also been looked at.

However, it is thought that any bid for one of these forwards may depend on Anthony Martial leaving Old Trafford. The Frenchman’s contract expires in June and United would prefer to raise funds by selling him now rather than letting him leave on a free.
