Manchester United are “preparing to trigger” the £33.8m release clause in the contract of Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee, according to the Daily Telegraph reporter James Ducker.
The journalist, who is usually pretty reliable when it comes to the Red Devils, says that Erik ten Hag’s side are now expected to formalise their interest, after initially holding talks with the player’s camp.
Zirkzee has also been a target for Premier League rivals Arsenal, but it is believed that AC Milan will be United’s main challenger for the striker’s signature.
The Rossoneri have already told Bologna that they will trigger the buyout clause, but a deal has stalled over agent fees.
It remains to be seen whether United will encounter the same problems as the Serie A side, or if they can conclude negotiations successfully.
Why are United interested in signing Zirkzee?
Due to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, the club are not able to spend huge amounts of money this summer. It means deals for the likes of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen or Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins are not possible.
Considering Zirkzee’s potential and his availability for a relatively small fee, United have decided that he is well worth the outlay.
What does this mean for Rasmus Hojlund?
Anthony Martial’s imminent departure on a free transfer means the Dane would have been left with no competition for his place up front.
Hojlund had an encouraging first season at Old Trafford but many feel that he has taken on too much of the burden for scoring goals, especially at his age. Bringing in someone like Zirkzee means the pair can share the workload, whilst bringing different things to the table.
Some observers have actually compared Zirkzee to Roberto Firmino in the way that he likes to come deep for the ball. That is in stark contrast to Hojlund who prefers to lead the line and get in behind defences.
