Manchester United are considering a move for Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi, according to AS Colombia.
The Colombian, who has been capped 19 times by his country, has attracted interest from Bournemouth.
However, it is believed that United, Napoli and AC Milan are also keen on securing Lucumi’s signature.
The Red Devils were first linked with the defender back in February, and he has continued to impress for Bologna since then, helping the Serie A side finish in the Champions League places.
Lucumi is available for a reasonable price
AS report that Bologna will only hold out for a fee in the region of €18m (£15m), although that may increase depending on how much interest there is in the player.
Considering that United reportedly have a transfer budget of just £50m (before player sales), a move for someone like Lucumi does seem credible.
United need to find a backup for Martinez
While the main focus for the club is thought to be on finding a replacement for Raphael Varane, who will leave Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of June, the club could also do with another option for Lisandro Martinez at left centre-back.
The Argentinian international struggled with injuries during his second season at Old Trafford, and it meant that manager Erik ten Hag was forced into using Jonny Evans more than he would have liked.
Lucumi is left-footed, just like Martinez, so recruiting the Colombian international does seem like a sensible way of adding depth in a key area of the pitch.
You would think that United’s pulling power will move them ahead of Bournemouth in the battle for the player, but it remains to be seen if they will firm up their interest, having seemingly scouted him for a number of months.
