Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho “wants to leave” the Red Devils when the transfer window reopens in January, according to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.

The 23-year-old has been frozen out by manager Erik ten Hag, and Plettenberg says a loan move away from Old Trafford is the likeliest possibility.

“The thing will definitely be finished in the winter [market]. He wants to leave and there’s a possibility of a loan because a sale is too expensive for many interested parties.”

Sancho has refused to apologise to ten Hag after questioning his manager in public, and Plettenberg’s remarks suggest there is no way back for the player.

Where will Sancho go if he leaves United?

Plettenberg claims that the 23-year-old has been in contact with the manager of his former club Borussia Dortmund but a return to Signal Iduna Park is deemed “unrealistic” at the moment.

Roma have been mentioned as another alternative, while Chelsea were reportedly offered Sancho in negotiations for Marc Cucurella in the summer. However, there is currently no frontrunner for the winger’s signature.

Sancho’s wages could be a problem for potential suitors

The England international is currently earning £250,000 a week at United, which means it will be tough to offload him even on loan.

United could ultimately end up paying some of Sancho’s salary even if he is offloaded on a temporary basis for the rest of the season.

A permanent sale would likely be preferable but, as Plettenberg mentions, nobody is willing to pay a sizeable fee for the player at this time. There was some talk that teams in Saudi Arabia could offer Sancho an exit route but he is reportedly not keen on moving to the Middle East. It leaves United in a rather unenviable position.
