Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has given an average score for Manchester United’s transfer business so far this summer.

The former club captain feels the jury is still out on the three signings that the Red Devils have made over the past couple of months, and he is hoping for two more additions before the transfer window closes:

“I’d say currently a solid 6.5 out of 10. We don’t know fully how the three signings are doing to do so it could shift up or down. I wanted a proven striker with Hojland and another MDF. Let’s see what happens.”

In terms of a midfielder, Neville may well get his wish, with the club being linked with the likes of Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat and Everton’s Amadou Onana.

The chances of the Red Devils signing a “proven striker” are rather low at this stage. The main reason for that is the amount it cost to sign Rasmus Hojlund.

Will investing £175m in three players pay off?

United have already reinforced three key positions over the summer. The departure of David De Gea forced the club to invest heavily in Andre Onana.

The Cameroon international had an impressive competitive debut against Wolves. The same couldn’t be said for Mason Mount who struggled in his first appearance.

Fans will have to wait longer to see Hojlund, with a back injury sustained in pre-season set to keep him out until early September at the earliest.

The Wolves performance does suggest United need more signings

While it would be harsh to make any definitive judgements about United’s prospects this season based on the opening-day win over Wolves; the fact that they struggled so much in keeping the ball was a concern.

To get some balance in the middle of the pitch, you would expect a new midfielder will be brought in ahead of the transfer deadline.
