Former Australian international goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer believes Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag should dump Andre Onana in favour of Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale.
Although Onana was only signed from Inter Milan for £47m in the summer, Schwarzer claims that Ramsdale is “far better” than the Red Devils’ current No.1:
“If he didn’t go to Chelsea, where else is there for Ramsdale? There’s Manchester United, which I think would also be an excellent destination for him.”
“He’s far better than Andre Onana in my opinion but probably not in Erik ten Hag’s opinion, as he will most likely stick with his summer signing given how much he’s backed him through his early struggles at Old Trafford so far.”
“Manchester United could definitely do with Ramsdale but I think their priorities lie elsewhere.”
Ramsdale is likely to be on the market in January
The England international lost his starting place at Arsenal to David Raya back in September, and he has not been able to get back into the side on a regular basis since then.
Arsenal may be receptive to selling Ramsdale this month, but only if they receive a significant bid. They are not expected to let him leave on loan, which would probably rule out United from making an approach anyway.
Ten Hag will stick with his man
As Schwarzer points out, ten Hag backed the move to sign Onana in the first place so you can’t see him losing faith in the Cameroon international after just six months.
While many have been critical of United’s No.1, it has to be said that his underlying numbers have not been too bad. He has the third-highest save percentage (73.7%) in the Premier League this season, behind Liverpool’s Alisson Becker and West Ham’s Alphonse Areola.
