United to offer Fellaini new contract after Belgian sinks Arsenal

Manchester United are set to offer Marouane Fellaini a new contract after the Belgian scored a dramatic late winner against Arsenal at the weekend.

Fellaini, who joined United in 2013, was set to leave the club at the end of the season as a free agent.

However after heading his side’s winner in the 2-1 victory over Arsenal on Sunday, United boss Jose Mourinho claims the 30-year-old will now be staying at Old Trafford.

Mourinho said: “I think a player that grabs the crest after scoring is telling clearly that he wants to stay.

“I want him to stay, the club wants him to stay, I think he will stay, it is nearly there.

“We are trying to organise our team and are thinking about improvements. Until now, I haven’t lost one second thinking about replacing him because I think he will stay.”

Fellaini’s late strike at the weekend was his 20th in an United shirt since joining the club five years ago, and his fifth this season.

While he divide opinion, Fellaini’s goal was typical of his often hit-and-miss career at Old Trafford – the Belgian popping up just at the time his side need him most.

And team-mate Victor Lindelof believes his danger off the bench makes him one of the club’s most important players.

“He’s a strong player and is very important for us, especially at the end of the game when we have a lot of the ball and we attack,” the defender told MUTV.

“He gives us some more options, he can go into the box and he’s very dangerous in there, so he’s a very important player for us.”
