United to invest ‘only in the basics’ this summer says Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho insists Manchester United will invest ‘only in the basics’ this summer rather than spend big on new players.

United have spent in excess of £250 million on talent such as Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba across the last two seasons, however such spending has ultimately failed to bring the club the desired success.

While last season the Red Devils won both the Europa League and FA Cup, they were unable to mount a challenge for the Premier League title.

And the same has been true this time around. Out of the Champions League and having already conceded the title to rivals Manchester City – United’s only hope of silverware remains the FA Cup.

They face Chelsea in the final later next month at Wembley.

And this summer, instead of once again taking to the transfer market to try and buy the solutions to the club’s problems, Jose Mourinho says United will invest only where necessary and instead give the club’s young players a chance to shine.

“We are going to invest the basic to improve our squad,” he said. “We need to find a replacement for Michael Carrick; if Marouane Fellaini leaves we need to find a replacement for him; and there is always in a squad, a player or a couple of players that are not playing a lot and will try to leave.

“So we will touch our squad and believe that rather than spend, spend, spend, it is [about] the evolution of our players.

“We have some young players that need to get with both hands opportunities for their evolution.”
