United to axe six players this summer after failing to land Premier League title

Manchester United are set to axe as many as six players this summer after failing to land the Premier League this season, according to reports.

Jose Mourinho spent over £150 million during both the summer and January transfer windows to bring in new talent, however such moves have thus far proven insufficient to fire the Red Devils towards silverware this season.

United currently sit second in the Premier League, 16 points behind leaders Manchester City with only eight games to play.

Mourinho’s side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup before Christmas at the hands of Bristol City, and earlier this month out of the Champions League by Sevilla – meaning their only remaining hope of silverware is in the FA Cup.

They take on Tottenham in the semi-final at Wembley in just under a month.

After yet another season of heavy spending with relatively little success, United are expected to turn again to the transfer market this summer, but Mourinho must first trim his squad to make room for and help fund any such transfers.

The club are reportedly ready to cash in on Ander Herrera, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind, all of whom have struggled for playing time under Mourinho this season.

Juan Mata and Chris Smalling are also expected to leave the club, as is Anthony Martial, who has been controversially forced out of the side since the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in January.

Martial has scored 11 times and produced eight assists this season having only started 20 games in all competitions.
