United Targeting Move For De Jong Alternative Who Has 103M Release Clause

Manchester United have been scouting Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez in recent weeks, according to reports in the English media.

The Argentinian international only moved to Portugal in the summer for €10m and he has a release clause said to be worth around €120m (£103m).

Fernandez was targeted by a number of teams before his switch to Benfica, including Manchester City, Newcastle and Wolves. It is, therefore, likely that United would have to battle other Premier League clubs for his signature if they were to make n offer for the playmaker in January or next summer.

It is believed that scouts are considering the 21-year-old as a potential alternative to Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong. The Red Devils agreed a fee for the Dutchman last summer only for the player to turn down the move. Chelsea and Liverpool have subsequently been linked with the player, but it seems that Erik ten Hag’s side have now switched targets.
