United Target ‘Mystery Striker’

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has revealed that Manchester United are close on the signing of a ‘surprise’ player. The Dutchman refused to give further details on the player, but hinted it was a striker who has not previously been reported in the media.

“It’s not the striker that the media has written,” Van Gaal revealed.

“But you have to wait and see. The transfer period is open until August 31 or September 2.”

The news comes shortly after ex United legend Paddy Crerand revealed on MUTV that Manchester United fans are in for a surprise in the coming days. “I think fans will be surprised in the next 7-10 days.” He said. [Via MUTV]

There’s definitely substance in this, but as of now just about everyone has drawn a blank on who this striker could be. Reports over the last few days have given moves for Thomas Müller and Pedro a bit of backing, with United apparently bidding £70 million for the German, and willing to activate Pedro’s £22.5 million release clause. However, whilst there’s no real evidence that The Red Devils are interested in either player, it should also be noted that neither player is a natural centre forward by trade.

Van Gaal confirmed Wayne Rooney would play a striking role next season, something which will come as good news to United fans given that the last time the Englishman led the line in the 2011/12 season, he managed 27 league goals. The manager also insisted that Javier Hernandez would join up with the squad on July 25th and play a role in the side next season, despite still being heavily rumoured with a move away. James Wilson, whilst possessing vast potential, could be too young to take centre stage in the Premier League for a club battling for the title.

With Robin van Persie and Falcao’s exits, it was always going to be heavily rumoured that United would be in the market for a new striker. Although fans are none the wiser on who United could sign, LvG’s comments at least means that the hunt is well and truly on.
