United Target Former City Player As Potential Low Cost Sancho Alternative

Manchester United will target Schalke winger Rabbi Matondo if they fail to secure the signing of Jadon Sancho this summer, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The 19-year-old only moved to the German club from Manchester City for £11m in January 2019 and it must be said that he has yet to establish himself in David Wagner’s starting eleven.

Matondo does, however, already have four senior caps for Wales, having been given his first call up by Ryan Giggs in November 2018.

The United legend may well have recommended the teenager to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his backroom staff, much like with his international teammate Daniel James.

It does, though, appear that Matondo is only a low cost back up option if Borussia Dortmund make excessive demands in negotiations for Sancho.

The Bundesliga club have consistently said that they want to keep the England international and reports indicate the winger could cost in excess of £100m.

United have been linked with a whole host of players in recent weeks, with the likes of Matondo, Swansea’s Joe Rodon and Benfica’s Carlos Vinicius being the latest examples. Whether the Red Devils will actually sign any of them, it remains to be seen.
