United should make Paul Pogba captain

Manchester United should make Paul Pogba their club captain, according to former Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp.

Michael Carrick’s retirement has left a void in the captaincy role at the club. Of course, Antonio Valencia spent the majority of last season as United’s skipper, but it’s fair to say that he doesn’t always demonstrate the sort of leadership skills we have seen in the past from greats such as Roy Keane and Nemanja Vidic.

Also, with Jose Mourinho’s criticism of the 33-year-old this summer, labelling the right-back as being unfit, is Valencia’s place in the team as secure as it was last season?

It leaves them with a genuine dilemma as to who should captain the side next season. We all know Pogba has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, but could the Frenchman be the man to don the captain’s armband this season?

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp certainly thinks so, suggesting that his leadership skills at the World Cup with France demonstrates that he would be a good candidate.

“I saw a leader in that dressing room, full of superstars, big-name players and they all listened to him,” said Redknapp on Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre.

“I think it would have been a great move; why not make Paul Pogba captain? Why not say to him ‘you’re my man. There’s the pressure on you now, put the armband on and see how you like it.’ I think he needs a manager to put his arm around him, a little bit like (France manager Didier) Deschamps did, and tell him ‘you’re the man.’ You see now, a player who is a world champion.

“Jose was critical of his own players last season, and (Sir Alex) Ferguson used to give his own players all sorts of stick, but never in public. I don’t think that relationship gets repaired with those two.”
