Barcelona are keen on signing Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld in January, according to reports in the UK.
The Catalan club have only two fit centre-backs currently and they are said to be looking to reinforce their defence when the transfer window reopens.
Ajax centre-half Matthijs de Ligt is believed to be Barca’s favoured option, but they are aware that any deal before the summer is highly unlikely. A move for Alderweireld is therefore seen as more realistic.
The Spurs star’s contract expires in the summer, and while the London club do have the option of extending it for a further year, it would also bring a £25m release clause into play.
Manchester United could also rival Barcelona for Alderweireld’s signature. Manager Jose Mourinho has repeatedly stated he is unhappy with his options at centre-back and the Belgian international is likely being considered as a possible solution.
The defender remains a regular for Tottenham despite his contract impasse with the London club, making nine starts in all competitions this season.
