United Refusing To Pjanic Buy (But could that lead to Pogba?)

As a United fan we have all got used to the endless carousel of players being linked with our club. Every transfer window it’s the same with players from across the globe being touted as potential arrivals. It’s not unusual and certainly natural that a club of Manchester United’s size and statue are always looking to improve and strengthen their squad with new arrivals.

When Jose stepped into the managerial role at Old Trafford practically every player in the world who could stand on one leg was linked to the club. I’m surprised Pele wasn’t rumoured to be signing….wait he was.

Every single one of us play manager and think we know who would and who wouldn’t make a good United player. I lost count of the amount of times I dreamt of Cantona and Batistuta up front during the 90’s
It’s ridiculous to think every player linked to our club will end up signing terms, no matter how much we hope they do.

United moved early in the transfer window by splashing out £30m on defender Eric Bailly from Villarreal, as Mourinho looked to fill gaps in the squad. With more arrivals expected, this transfer window could well be the most important in recent years.

But have United missed a trick? Have we missed out on a player that could have returned us to the top?
I’m talking about Miralem Pjanjic. The 26 year old Bosnian completed his shock move from Roma to Italian Champions Juventus on Monday in a £25m deal.

(Yes that’s right just £25m!!! as Juventus do a Bayern Munich and weaken their league rivals.)
Pjanic would have been an ideal United player, he had a low buy-out clause and is deadly at dead ball situations.

I remember seeing him have an excellent game and score a world class goal versus us in a pre season friendly in 2014, when he lobbed Ben Amos from his own half. (actually not that hard with Amos in goal!) See the goal below…

Pjanic had a stand out season last year scoring 12 goals and creating 13 assists in a Roma team that finished 3rd in Serie A.

Able to play in any midfield position he would have been a welcome addition to our squad but maybe this deal runs deeper? With Pjanic making the move to Turin does this point to the imminent departure of young Frenchmen Paul Pogba? Have Juventus moved early to replace an apparently unhappy Pogba? The ex Utd youngster will certainly command a fee upwards of £65m, so if he does move, Juventus have yet again been smart in their transfer dealings. (Take note Ed!!)

Pogba’s destination remains another question, and quite rightly he will have the elite scrambling for his signature. A return to Manchester, where he has fond memories of his teenage years is not out of the realms of make believe, hopefully not the blue side!

Whatever the outcome I feel that in Pjanic, yet another quality player has slipped through our fingers. We wait with anticipation as Mourinho plots the next move in the resurgence of Manchester Utd.
