United One Of ‘Two Big Names’ In Battle To Sign 36 Cap Defender With 103M Release Clause

Manchester United and Chelsea are the “two big names” waiting to see whether Juventus centre-back Matthijs de Ligt will be available this summer, according to TMW.

The Italian website claim that the two Premier League sides are keeping close tabs on the defender, with there being a possibility that his release clause will be lowered from €120m (£103m).

De Ligt has two years remaining on his contract and he revealed at the weekend that he will hold talks with Juve over an extension, but it has been widely reported that the Dutchman is looking for the buyout fee to be reduced.

Some believe that the 36-cap international wants the clause to go as low as €70m (£60m) but that is unlikely to be a figure that his club would accept.

Respected journalist Paul Hirst has confirmed United’s interest in de Ligt very recently so this transfer does seem to have some legs.
