United On Alert As Serie A Defender’s £32.4m Release Clause Stays In Place As Contract Talks Break Down

Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are both keeping tabs on Roma defender Kostas Manolas, according to reports in Italy.

The Greek international was heavily linked with Chelsea last summer, but the centre-back remained in Italy.

Manolas has been in talks with the Giallorossi over renewing his contract at the Italian club, but the two sides have reportedly reached an impasse in negotiations.

It means that the centre-half’s €36m (£32.4m) release clause can still be triggered at any time. United reportedly have £50m to spend in the January transfer window with a centre-back a top priority.

However, Manolas is said to be keen to stay at Roma, at least until the end of the season. The 27-year-old remains a key figure in the Serie A side’s defence, having played nearly every game under manager Eusebio Di Francesco this campaign.

The Greek defender has made 20 starts in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing one assist.
