The 5 Premier League Managers Who Are Favourites To Be Sacked

After Manchester United suffered their 5th defeat in 10 games against Manchester City at the weekend, questions have been asked about Erik ten Hag’s future.

While there is no indication that he will be sacked in the immediate term, pressure is growing on the Dutchman.

United’s poor start has been a shock to fans, who were hoping that ten Hag would be able to build on his first season in charge. His position is now being called into question.

Press the next page to find out which Premier League managers are favourites to be sacked (odds from Sky Bet as of 31st October).

5) Mauricio Pochettino (Chelsea) – 20/1

It was thought that the Blues had turned the corner after a poor start to the campaign under their new manager.

Consecutive wins against Brighton (in the Carabao Cup), Fulham and Burnley, as well as a creditable draw versus Arsenal, had led to some optimism that things were moving in the direction under Pochettino.

However, the 2-0 defeat to Brentford at the weekend has prompted more recriminations, with the club falling to 11th in the Premier League table.

3 wins, 3 draws and 4 defeats from the opening 10 fixtures was not what anyone was expecting at the beginning of the season.

=3) Vincent Kompany (Burnley) – 8/1

The Clarets are currently sitting 19th in the table, having picked up only 4 points from the first 10 league games.

After being promoted as champions from the second tier, and spending nearly £100m on new signings, it was expected that Burnley would perform better than they have so far.

Kompany has continued to employ an attacking style of play following promotion, but it hasn’t proven nearly as effective this campaign, with his team having scored 8 goals and conceded 25.

Whether that will lead Burnley’s owners to appoint someone with a more pragmatic approach in order to retain their top-flight status, we shall have to wait and see.

=3) Erik ten Hag (Manchester United) – 8/1

The former Ajax head coach has spent over £400m on signings since being appointed in the summer of 2022.

While some pundits, including Gary Neville, have blamed the owners for the club’s performances on the pitch, ten Hag has been given the resources to build a squad capable of challenging at the top end of the table.

However, United currently find themselves 8th, 11 points adrift of 1st place Tottenham after only 10 matches.

Their 3-0 defeat at home to archrivals City on Sunday demonstrated how far ten Hag’s side are behind the best teams in the league. Improvement is needed fast or the Dutchman’s time at Old Trafford could come to an end.

2) Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth) – 7/1

The Cherries made the controversial decision to sack Gary O’Neil in the summer despite the fact that he secured a midtable finish.

So far, the change of manager has not paid off. Iraola did get his first win against Burnley at the weekend but Bournemouth are lingering dangerously close to the relegation places.

You do feel that, unless results improve significantly in the coming weeks, the former Rayo Vallecano manager could lose his job.

Iraola may get until the next international break at the end of November to prove that he deserves to remain in charge.

1) Paul Heckingbottom (Sheffield United) – 1/3

No one will be surprised that the Blades boss is odds-on to lose his job, considering that his team have picked up one solitary point from 10 games.

However, it should be pointed out that Heckingbottom did incredibly well to get his team promoted in the first place with very limited financial resources.

United also sold two of their best players in Iliman Ndiaye and Sander Berge this summer, and their total net spend of £34.2m isn’t exactly going to help them stay in the top flight.

Heckingbottom may, therefore, get a bit more leeway than others to turn things around but he is on borrowed time.
