Collymore Hopes United Steer Clear Of Ex-Chelsea Boss Who Doesn’t Have A “Big Enough” Personality

Former Premier League striker Stan Collymore does not think Manchester United should hire Graham Potter if they sack Erik ten Hag.

Reports have suggested that Sir Jim Ratcliffe could consider hiring the former Chelsea head coach if the British billionaire does take charge of the day-to-day running of the club. However, while Collymore rates Potter as a manager, he doesn’t believe he would be the right fit for the Red Devils:

“Graham Potter would be a great coach for Manchester United, in my opinion. That club, however, needs a manager with a massive personality.”

“Ten Hag hasn’t been that, David Moyes didn’t have it, Mourinho was but the job maybe came at the wrong time in his career and he wasn’t attack-minded enough for the Old Trafford faithful. Therefore, I don’t think Potter is a big enough manager to be able to turn things around at Old Trafford but he is still a very good coach.”

Is ten Hag’s job under threat?

Ahead of the Liverpool game, the Dutchman has retained the backing of all the important decision-makers at Old Trafford, despite some awful recent results and performances.

There are even doubts over whether Ratcliffe would have the final say on sacking ten Hag anyway, with it being claimed that Joel Glazer remains in charge of such matters.

Who is the favourite to replace ten Hag if he is sacked by United?

Most bookmakers have placed Potter as the current favourite to be the next United manager, although that is likely due to recent speculation rather than anything more concrete.

The other runners and riders include Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane, ex-Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui (who has also been mentioned as a candidate this week), as well as Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim, ex-Germany head coach Hansi Flick and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi.
