2 United Stars Among 11 Premier League Players To Make ‘Golden Boy’ Award Shortlist

Manchester United pair Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho have been named in the top 100 shortlist for the 2023 Golden Boy Award.

The prize is given out by Italian newspaper Tuttosport and is handed to the best young footballer under the age of 21 in European football.

Previous winners include the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, as well as United players Wayne Rooney, Anderson and Anthony Martial.

Hojlund and Garnacho are joined on this year’s shortlist by nine others from Premier League clubs.

Chelsea have three nominated, including Levi Colwill, Romeo Lavia and Lesley Ugochukwu. Liverpool (Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic) and Brighton (Evan Ferguson and Julio Enciso) have two nominees each respectively, while Newcastle’s Lewis Hall and Manchester City’s Rico Lewis were also chosen.

Both Hojlund and Garnacho have been recognised for breakout seasons

It has been a rapid rise for Rasmus Hojlund, in particular, who had just joined Atalanta from Sturm Graz this time last year. The Dane turned heads with a number of his performances in Italy, and he ended up scoring 10 times in 34 appearances for the Serie A club before making the £72m move to Old Trafford.

Garnacho, meanwhile, had already made his senior debut before last campaign but he was given a lot more opportunities by manager Erik ten Hag, ending the 2022/23 season with 5 goals and 5 assists in 34 appearances. Both players will be looking to kick on and make an even greater impact in the upcoming weeks and months.

How can United fans get involved in nominating their players for the award?

While the accolade is ultimately handed out by journalists, the shortlist is whittled down by a public vote.

Supporters can vote for either Hojlund or Garnacho by heading over to the Tuttosport website here.
