6 United Players With Contracts That Expire At The End Of The Season

Manchester United have had a bad habit of letting high-profile players leave on free transfers in recent years.

In the last two summers, the likes of Paul Pogba and David De Gea have left Old Trafford for nothing.

It’s not something that the Red Devils should allow to happen but it continues to be an issue, and there is still a sizeable list who could become free agents next summer.

Press the next page as we list the six United players who have contracts set to expire in 2024.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

The fullback is one of a number of players on this list where United have an option to extend his stay for another 12 months if they so wish.

Wan-Bissaka has been a regular for United since the back end of last season, having been named in 13 of the last 16 starting lineups for league games when he has been available.

It is, therefore likely that, if a new deal is not agreed before the New Year, the club will automatically trigger the extension.

The fullback did miss the 1-0 win over Luton Town last weekend with illness, and he had also spent over a month on the treatment table with a hamstring injury before that, but he should return after the international break

Victor Lindelof

The Swedish international spoke out about his contract situation in the last international break in October.

Lindelof says he fully expects that United will trigger their option to extend his stay at Old Trafford for another twelve months:

“I have an option [for another] year and there is a deadline for it. When exactly I don’t know. But it feels quite likely that it will be activated.”

Lindelof has featured prominently for United this season, having started and scored against Luton last weekend.

Anthony Martial

Like Wan-Bissaka and Lindelof, there is an option to keep the France international for another year.

However, it is believed that Martial won’t be kept around beyond the summer unless there is a dramatic improvement in his form between now and May.

Considering the 27-year-old’s fitness problems, it is somewhat surprising that he has been injury-free since pre-season. Even so, his performances have been rather underwhelming.

Martial has scored just 1 goal and contributed 1 assist in 15 appearances so far this campaign. It should be pointed out, though, that the forward has made just 4 starts.

Hannibal Mejbri

The Tunisian international has been handed a number of opportunities by ten Hag in the first few months of the season.

Mejbri has racked up six appearances so far, including four starts, but he hasn’t played in any of the last six Premier League matches, being an unused substitute.

As he is still only 20 years of age, you would think that United will be keen to retain his services beyond next summer.

With the club having an option to extend Mejbri’s stay for another 12 months, you would expect the player to remain in Manchester.

Jonny Evans

It’s been very surprising to see the 35-year-old get so much game time this season, after joining as a free agent from Leicester City.

Many felt that Evans was brought in merely to make up the numbers but ten Hag has had other ideas.

The Red Devils boss has clearly been impressed with the Northern Ireland international, having started him ahead of the likes of Raphael Varane.

Evans is currently sidelined with a thigh injury but there is nothing to say that he can’t return to fitness and win himself another contract between now and next summer.

Tom Heaton

The 37-year-old spent the first month of the campaign out of contention with a calf problem.

However, Heaton returned to the bench for the 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich back in September, deputising for Andre Onana.

With Altay Bayindir having also arrived at Old Trafford at the start of the season, though, Heaton is very much third choice.

If the former England international is happy to simply be a practice keeper, he could be offered another one-year extension at the end of the season.
