United Must Retain Zlatan For Another Year

Manchester United may have claimed the first trophy of what they hope will be many under Jose Mourinho by beating Southampton in the EFL Cup final on Sunday, however, that has left no assurances over their star man.

Summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the saviour once again at Wembley over the weekend, as his 87th minute header ensured the League Cup would be heading back to Old Trafford, despite Mourinho’s side being second best for the majority of the afternoon.

However, since his late heroics at the national stadium, speculation around his Manchester United future has intensified with no one ruling out another move this summer, with Serie A side Napoli having been mooted as a potential destination.

The club have an option to extend his current deal by a year, one which Mourinho has made very clear he is keen to activate with the Swede having silenced all doubters, scoring 22 goals in his last 20 outings in a United shirt.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker has dug Mourinho’s side out time and again this season notching crucial goals against the run of play to keep the Red Devils in the chase for the Champions League.

United are the in form side going into the final stages of the Premier League run-in, with 13 games left to navigate, and that is in no small part down to the 35-year-old. It is likely you can good odds on United if you are going to bet on the upcoming Premier League matches.

Ibrahimovic admitted after the win at Wembley that it was the former Chelsea manager, along with some nagging from his sons, who convinced him to make the move to Old Trafford last summer, and the Portuguese will now have to persuade him to stay put another year.

Mourinho looks, after a slow start to the season, to have found the perfect formula at United. With the League Cup in the bag, his side are still going strong on all fronts, with dates booked in against Chelsea and Rostov in the FA Cup and Europa League, respectively.

Should they keep up their form until the close of the season, Mourinho will have a solid base to build on, with some quality additions over the summer, ahead of a pursuit of the Premier League title.

The former Real Madrid boss will undoubtedly want Ibrahimovic to be a part of that title challenge next season, and will be doing everything to keep him at the club.

Mourinho has already called on fans to camp outside the house of the world’s best journeyman striker, but there is no one better than himself to convince him to stay on.

The pair both possess the same hell-bent determination to succeed that few in the Premier League can match and, with that, make quite the duo. Furthermore, Mourinho will be looking to use marquee signings, such as Antoine Griezmann, as a tangible sign of his ambitions.

Should the Portuguese manage to prove to his talisman that the Premier League title, something Ibrahimovic will be desperate to add to his collection, is obtainable next season, there is little to stop him agreeing to that extension.
