United Might Sign The ‘Other’ French Midfielder

All the stories over the past few days/weeks have been whether Jose Mourinho can leverage his relationship with super agent Mino Raiola to secure the signing of Paul Pogba from Juventus who of course left Old Trafford for the measly figure of £800,000 several seasons ago. The focus has always been on Pogba as reporters and fans alike have assumed that Pogba is the fourth signing in the much vaunted quadruple key signings that Jose Mourinho said he was going to make to start his Old Trafford rebuild.

With the free-agent signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the signing of Eric Bailly from Villareal and securing Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Borussia Dortmund, it has left what may be the most difficult signing yet to complete – Juve’s Pogba. The questions remain can Mourinho convince the French midfieder to join United after his acrimonious departure albeit when SAF was manager and is Pogba realy worth the £100million he is supposedly valued at?

Looking at the performances of les Blues at Euro2016 there is another midfieder who looked as good or certainly almost as good as Pogba and that player is PSG’s Blaise Matuidi who proved in the tournament that he has many of the same attributes as Pogba – a powerful box-to-box runner with strong tackling and team ethic. The only major downside to Matuidi is his age as at just turned 29 years old he is 6 years the senior of Pogba but Matuidi is still in his prime and could be signed for £25-30million from PSG leaving Mourinho with plenty of cash to still add more signings or give deals to current players.

Real Madrid are reportedly really keen on Pogba and it may be hard to beat them to the Frenchman so perhaps Mourinho is right to sign Matuidi and to use his remaining warchest to add more quality to other areas of his squad.
