Thomas Tuchel has “fallen down the list” of candidates to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, according to The Independent.
Up until recently, the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager was among the favourites for the job but it is believed the German has failed to convince INEOS that he is the long-term solution in the dugout.
United’s minority owners are said to deem Tuchel a “bridge” appointment, meaning that they don’t see him sticking around at Old Trafford for too long.
Considering that he hasn’t lasted more than two years in his last three roles at Paris-Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich that seems to be a fair assessment.
However, Tuchel’s CV is pretty impressive, having won the Champions League only three years ago, which is not an achievement that other candidates can claim to have.
Who are the other contenders for the United job?
The Independent claim that INEOS still really like England head coach Gareth Southgate but his involvement in the European Championships complicates things as they ideally want an immediate replacement for ten Hag.
Ex-Brighton boss Robert De Zerbi and another former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino remain in contention, while Brentford’s Thomas Frank is said to have made a good impression when talks were held with the Dane.
When will a decision be made on ten Hag?
It is believed that fans will have to wait at least another week before the season review comes to an end. Ten Hag is also on holiday so there will be no further discussion about the Dutchman’s future until he is back in the country.
The lack of a standout candidate to replace ten Hag could end up leading to INEOS keeping faith with the current manager but nothing is set in stone yet.
