United Line Up Cody Gakpo Alternative But His Eye Watering 130M Release Clause Could Be A Problem

Manchester United are interested in signing AC Milan winger Rafael Leao, according to reports in the Dutch media.

The Red Devils would prefer to pursue PSV captain Cody Gakpo, whose asking price is said to be around €50m (£43m). However, his club are only willing to do a deal next summer.

With manager Erik ten Hag keen to strengthen his forward line in January, to make up for the goals lost following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, United may make an offer for Leao instead.

The Portuguese international will be a lot more expensive than Gakpo. He has a €150m (£130m) release clause, although there is a chance he could be available for a fee well below that figure.

Milan are struggling to agree a new contract with Leao and, with his current deal set to expire in 2024, the Serie A champions could be forced into selling their player in the New Year.

It’s doubtful that he’ll be as cheap as Gakpo, though and, combined with the fact that Chelsea and Manchester City are also after the player, United could be better off pursuing alternatives.
