United Join Two PL Rivals In Pursuing £35M Rated Playmaker Who Has Lit Up La Liga This Season

Manchester United are among the six clubs pursuing the signature of Celta Vigo attacking midfielder Gabri Veiga, according to reports in the Spanish media.

The 21-year-old had a breakout season in La Liga, having scored nine goals and provided four assists in 35 appearances. It isn’t, therefore, a surprise that he is now attracting interest from plenty of other clubs.

In addition to United, rivals Manchester City, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid are also thought to be keen on signing Veiga.

The playmaker has a €40m (£35m) release clause, which Celta expect clubs to pay if they want to secure his services this summer. The Spanish club have tried to tie down Veiga to a new contract, which would also increase the buyout fee, but they haven’t been able to get an agreement with the player. They are now reportedly resigned to losing him in the coming weeks.

Do United need a player like Veiga?

The Spanish Under 21 international is very talented but he is a no.10 by trade so it is hard to see where he would get game time in Erik ten Hag’s side, considering the presence of Bruno Fernandes.

It is believed that the club’s priority is to sign a no.6 or a no.8 to take some of the workload off Casemiro. Reports in the Portuguese media have claimed the Red Devils could make an offer for Sporting Lisbon’s Manuel Ugarte. The Uruguayan would arguably be a much better fit than Veiga.
