United Hoping To Complete 46.5M Deal By The Weekend As Van Der Sar Plays Key Role

Manchester United are aiming to complete the transfer of Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez by the weekend, according to 90min.com.

The website reports that the Red Devils are hoping to fly the Argentine out to Australia for their pre-season tour, after agreeing a €55m (£46.5m) fee for the player.

It is believed that former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Star played a vital role in negotiations. Ajax were looking to hold out for €60m (£50.9m) but van der Sar, who is the Dutch club’s CEO, helped persuade his board to sell for a slightly lower figure.

Martinez will cost €50m (£42.2m) upfront with another €5m (£4.3m) in add-ons. The 24-year-old is said to have rejected advances from Arsenal as he prioritised joining up with his former manager Erik ten Hag.

A third summer signing is likely to follow very soon, with Christian Eriksen expected to join once a very comprehensive medical is completed.
