What has been a bad week for Manchester City has made for a great one for United.
Last week Pep Guardiola’s side were unbeaten at home in the league, set to scoop the Premier League title against their most bitter rivals and still on course for a historic European treble.
But it’s been a six-day spell to forget for Guardiola and Manchester City.
It began last Wednesday when the Cityzens travelled to Anfield for their Champions League quarter-final first leg, looking for retribution after their 4-3 loss to Jurgen Klopp’s side earlier in the year.
Instead, they left merseyside on the back of a humiliating 3-0 defeat and with it all to do when the sides were to meet again a week later.
Saturday, things got worse. Sailing at 2-0 against United at The Etihad and with one hand on the Premier League trophy, Guardiola’s side capitulated in the second-half. A Paul Pogba brace and a Chris Smalling winner denied City a Premier League victory parade in front of their Mancunian rivals and ended their unbeaten run at home.
And the misery was concluded last night as Liverpool beat Pep Guardiola’s side for the third time this season to knock them out of the Champions League and end any hopes of securing the treble.
City may still be dead set to secure the Premier League and already have secured the Carabao Cup, but after a season of having everybody else play second fiddle to them, Guardiola’s side’s miserable week seems to have put a smile on the face of near enough everyone else in the country, especially the United fans …
