United Faithful Tear Into Team On Twitter After Bristol City Knockout The Holders From The Carabao Cup

So on Wednesday night Manchester United travelled to play the Championship’s 3rd placed surprise package Bristol City at Ashton Gate in their Carabao Cup 1/4 final.

Chelsea hosted Premier League rivals Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge in the other Carabao Cup 1/4 final with the Blues winning it 2-1 with an injury time winner from substitute Alvaro Morata after Bournemouth got the equaliser very late on.

Last night Manchester City and Arsenal progressed through to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup. The Gunners squeaked out a tight win 1-0 win at the Emirates over David Moyes’ improving West Ham team as over 180 minutes of time played between the two clubs in the past 7 days they only managed 1 goal between them.

Man City led for much of their Carabao Cup 1/4 final against Leicester City at a raucous King Power Stadium only to concede a late penalty which Jamie Vardy converted. The game went to extra-time with no goals from either team and then went to penalties as Guardiola’s men held their nerve as both Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez either missed or had their penalties saved as City won 4-3 overall.

Tonight it certainly looked as though United had the easiest of the Carabao Cup 1/4 finals on paper and Jose Mourinho did field a strong line-up with Zlatan starting his first game along with the return of Paul Pogba plus Rashford and Martial started.

The first half ended 0-0 with Bristol City often stretched by United’s mega-million dollar line-up but with no goals yet it was City who went ahead first on 51 minutes as Bryan scored for Lee Johnson’s team.

It seemed to spur United into action though as it was only 7 minutes later, on 58 minutes that Zlatan Ibrahimovic got the equaliser and importantly his first goal for United since his serious injury. In the shock of the competition so far Bristol City then grabbed the winner in injury time as Smith scored the decisive goal making it Bristol City 2-1 Manchester United.

Overall United were the better team (with their incredibly expensively assembled squad thanks to the massive transfer fees they pay), creating numerous chances in the 1st half as Rashford and Zlatan hit the post and it could’ve easily been 4/5-1. But it wasn’t like that in the end- Bristol City defended valiantly and as they rode their luck but pushed numbers forward late and got their rewards with the last gasp winner.

Lukaku could’ve/should’ve scored twice when he came on but was prevented by 2 great saves by the City keeper who had a great game. Putting it bluntly Darmian was awful, Blind was awful, Romero not great. Rashford and Martial did not look at all interested.

It certainly seems as though the United fans agreed with our assessment as they criticised and ripped into the result and the way United played plus how Bristol City held it together. Read a selection of tweets below…

So United fans on Twitter did not mince their words as clearly the result is a bitter pill to swallow for many Red-Devils supporters and they were highly critical of almost the entire team it would seem.

United face Leicester City away in their next game on Saturday December 23rd and they will need to play much better if they hope to take 3 points off the Foxes who are resurgent under former Southampton boss Claude Puel. The Foxes were often looking the better side against Man City in the 2nd half and extra-time of their 1/4 final only losing on penalties.

What that says about Man United’s form at the moment – who knows – but it seems like their form is inconsistent at best now after the hot-start.

The draw for the semi-finals is Chelsea vs Arsenal and Man City vs Bristol City with the games to be played over 2 legs.
