United Dodge Bullet After It Emerges They Were Favourites To Sign 47.5M Chelsea Flop

Manchester United were Timo Werner’s favoured destination in the months before he decided to join Chelsea, according to reports in the German media.

It is believed that the striker held talks with his advisor Murat Lokurlu, describing the Red Devils as the favourites for his signature with the Blues as the main alternative.

United, Chelsea and Liverpool were all linked with Werner in the summer of 2020 but it was the London club who eventually won the race for the German international’s signature, paying £47.5m in July last year.

Since his arrival in England, though, Werner has struggled to rediscover the goalscoring form that led to him hitting the back of the net 34 times in all competitions during his last season with Leipzig.

Werner bagged just 12 goals in his first year at Chelsea, and he has scored only once so far this campaign, having lost his starting place to Romelu Lukaku.
