United deserved to lift FA Cup says Jose Mourinho after Wembley defeat

Jose Mourinho believes Manchester United deserved to win the FA Cup.

The Red Devils lost 1-0 to Chelsea at Wembley earlier this afternoon, an Eden Hazard penalty proving the difference between the two sides in a tense affair in London.

The Belgian was brought down by Phil Jones in the 22nd minute after he was put through on goal by Cesc Fabregas.

United pressed and had numerous chances to equalise before the final whistle, however were unable to find the net.

And after the game, Mourinho – who lifted the trophy with United last season – says he felt his side deserved to emerge victorious.

“I congratulate them because they won but I don’t think they deserved to win,” he said, “I congratulate [them] because I am a sportsman and they scored one more goal than us and they get the Cup.

“I think I have to do what my job requires me to do – I am the Manchester United manager and I must be respectful, not just because they [Chelsea] were my previous club but because they are the opponent that won the Cup.

“But I think we deserved to win, we were the better team but that’s football. It’s disappointing. We were the second best team in the Premier League and we were the second best team in the FA Cup, although I think we were the best [in that competition].”
