United defender dedicates last gasp victory to travelling fans

Defender Chris Smalling has dedicated Manchester United’s last gasp victory over Crystal Palace to the travelling fans.

Around Around 2,000 supporters made the near 500-mile round trip to south-east London to see their side pull off a remarkable comeback at Selhurst Park to reclaim second place in the Premier League.

Andros Townsend gave the hosts an early lead with a superb strike into the top corner from the edge of the United box, before Patrick Van Aanholt doubled Palace’s lead three minutes into the second half.

The former Chelsea and Sunderland star capitalised on a quick-free kick taken by Jeffrey Schlupp to run clear in-behind the motionless United defence and slot home beyond David De Gea.

A victory for Palace would have taken them to 13th in the table, however it wasn’t to be as United pulled off one of the season’s most dramatic comebacks.

Smalling’s header on 55 minutes swung the momentum in the favour of Jose Mourinho’s side, and 20 minutes later persistence paid off for the visitors when Romelu Lukaku produced a fine finish from inside a crowded penalty area to level the scores.

Nemanja Matic then completed the turnaround with a phenomenal half-volley from outside the area – his first goal for the club – which gifted United all three points.

Following the victory, Smalling pledged the three points to the travelling fans.

“You could see the emotions when we were celebrating with the fans right at the end,” the defender told MUTV. “It’s been a while since there was a comeback like that, but it was a great feeling. I think the fans deserve that.”
